<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 3. Clip the first lead.</image:title>
<image:caption>Using a pair of flush-cutters clip the lead that connects the top of the battery to the board. It will be the lead on the right.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 2. Remove the Kapton tape securing the battery.</image:title>
<image:caption>As some components underneath may be damaged, be sure to do this carefully.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 7: Align the new battery.</image:title>
<image:caption>Align the new battery on top of the leads making sure you have the proper justification. If you are using a different model of battery, remember to check the polarity!</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 2. Remove the large chunks from the copper terminals.</image:title>
<image:caption>Spray the area with IPA (90%+) and using one side of a pair of needle-nosed tweezers, gently scrap away the large pices of buildup. You will want to do this carefully and take your time, you may find that the corrosion has eaten through the plastics or copper on the terminals.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/bba312b6-337d-4bd8-9271-6c9d03dd2d1a/IMG_1331.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 2. Locate the battery on the bottom of the CPU board near the HDD connector and the RAM expansion slot.</image:title>
<image:caption>It may already have some corrosion, so do a quick cleanup with some IPA before continuing.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/8d478ef2-d35d-41f4-9e7a-a5b021a33e87/IMG_1330.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 5. Check continuity.</image:title>
<image:caption>Before calling it good, you’ll want to check the continuity to make sure there hasn’t been any issues inside the connector itself. You can do this by turning the board over and testing the continuity between the 4 copper terminals and their respective through-hold solder joints on the underside of the board. This will help you diagnose other issues in the future.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/1664071097017-0KSZJU9YQRK7EDU78DQF/teardown_hero+2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 1. Complete the disassembly using my disassembly guide on iFixit.</image:title>
<image:caption>Removing without disassembly could cause damage to the board. As this battery is prone to leakage you may inadvertantly pull up or damage the components the tape is stuck to, or be unable to disconnect the battery connector if your try to do so via the hole in the bottom of the case.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/1665897151066-QD7W28KK5FPKTI7ILKB7/IMG_0841.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 3. Flip the board and continue.</image:title>
<image:caption>Turn the board over and continue on the underside. Make sure to get inside the loops of the copper terminals as well. Every so often, you’ll want to apply more IPA and brush off the loose buildup with an antistatic brush.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Projects - Critical Fixes - Step 3. Use a pair of needle-nose tweezers to disconnect the battery.</image:title>
<image:caption>The best case scenario, the battery connector will come away freely. If there has been corrosion, spray IPA on the board near the connector and carefully try to wiggle the tweezers back and forth to coax it loose. In the case on the left, the connector came away from the wires. The corrosion was so severe the connector was welded together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - Removing mistakes</image:title>
<image:caption>If you make a mistake and need to remove an icon, using a higher-strength masking tape will pull the transfers right off without damaging the paint or leave residue that may prevent another application. Warning: this is not reversible. Once a trasnfer has been removed, it can’t be re-applied!</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - An example of an Orange Peel texture.</image:title>
<image:caption>This can happen for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common are that your mixture doesn’t contain enough thinner, spraying at too great of an angle, or just using too much paint per pass.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/a7a2d8c3-8a49-48ed-a3c2-d41d0e506016/IMG_0577.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Flat Black (1K)</image:title>
<image:caption>Before you start spraying, make sure your paint is ready. For this restore, we’re using a 1K, 2X flat black spray paint from Rust-oleum. The 1K referrers to the fact that it is made up of 1 component (no separate hardener needed). The 2X refers to the coverage - this is a branding thing that’s specific to the Rust-oluem Ultra Cover Paint + Primer line. I’ve gotten great results for the base coat with this before. It adheres great to the plastics, covers well and importantly, the dry transfer icons needed in the next step adhere well to the cured surface.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63169d07d9ceca6ac7df98c8/ed5ac5ef-09d4-49ef-a5ca-45c945d87aed/IMG_0647.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - Once aligned, secure the transfer</image:title>
<image:caption>Once you have secured the icons down to the case, ensuring that it is as secure as possible, gently press down on the masking tappe and create a tight seal around the edges. You don’t want the trasnfer shifting around while you’re burnishing.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - Lightly burnish</image:title>
<image:caption>After this, use a spudger or wooden burnisher and lightly rub the surface of the icons. The amount of pressure you should use is if you are lightly shading an area with a pencil. It does not take a lot at all. Applying too much pressure will warp or distort the icons.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - The right tool for job</image:title>
<image:caption>There are different types of masking tape. A good tape will act as a seal to prevent the paint from getting underneath while protecting the part being masked from damage or leaving behind residue after removing it. The type of tape you pick should is based on the surface of what you’re masking.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Spray in slow, overlapping, even stokes. You’ll want to start and end each spray off to the side of the parts you’re painting. Wait 3 to 5 mins between each coat. If it’s a hot day, you’ll want to limit the direct exposure to the sun and you’ll be able to wait less time in between coats.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Immediately after each coat, I always clean off the nozzle with a q-tip and IPA. Make sure to dry the tip afterwards. Paint buildup in and around the nozzle can cause spurts and spots that can ruin the finish. If this happens, the ONLY thing you can do is wait for the paint to cure completely, sand down the paint spots and start over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Painting & Decals - How to know when to go back</image:title>
<image:caption>At this point in the process, If your sandpaper is getting gummed up with thick black paint, it’s an indication that you’re not done with the previous step. Some black paint is normal as that’s what we’re trying to even out, but if your paper is black and gooey, time to go back. You may need to take another pass with some IPA, but if it’s thick, consider reapplying the spray-paint remover.</image:caption>
